My 6 month internship at Invbots as a Software Engineer was an extremely fruitful journey wherein I got the opportunity to gain hands on experience with full stack development and advance my skills at my pace. The entire team was very welcoming and respectful which resulted in a family like environment. I was given the responsibility to work on the primary product of the company and was given ample of time and opportunity to showcase my skills. The tasks given to me were interesting as well as challenging and therefore it served the purpose of my internship which was to enjoy my work and become a better developer. The one thing that made Invbots different than most companies out there was the work culture and I would highly recommend Invbots to my colleagues and juniors.

Working in Invbots is extraordinarily engaging, exciting, and exploring. I worked as an algorithm developer and our team developed a financial report extractor by designing text-mining algorithms. The problems we face every day are all open-ended. We must come up with new ideas to overcome the shortcoming of the current algorithms. It is so exciting to boost the accuracy from 60% to 80%, and finally to 99.3%; and to reduce the processing time from 60s to 20s, and finally to 5s per report. The two-month internship in Invbots is a review of my life in Hong Kong, and a preview of my PhD career in the US. It is more than an experience, but a benchmark of my life.

During my summer internship with Invbots, I had exposure to various projects to improve its Fintech platform, including automation of extraction of data from the financial reports, company mapping and so on. Besides, I was also able to learn about valuing public listed companies with discounted cash flow models and form a view on it after researching about the company. Moreover, I was part of the commodities team and we learned about the fundamentals of oil & gold and initiated positions on it. What I appreciate the most is the flat culture of the firm. The director of the firm has extensive experience in finance and is willing to teach the team to be a better researcher and investor. I also enjoyed the authority given by the director, as interns were trusted to manage portfolios for the company. The weekly diversity presentation by interns from 8 countries during the internship was also insightful and fun.

Being my first finance-related internship, my experience in Invbots had allowed me to gain deeper insights into the world of investment and helped me significantly with my career planning. I developed a well-rounded understanding on different business sectors and trading strategies, helping me to further explore my interest in more sophisticated financial instruments. Throughout the internship, I was given numerous opportunities to take up leadership roles across product teams, present investment ideas and engage in real-world portfolio management.
